Northeast Georgia Medical Center – Green Tower & Emergency Parking

The Green Tower, a major expansion to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Gainesville campus, officially opened in February 2025. Spanning 11 stories, the tower includes emergency services on the ground floor, supporting ambulance and critical patient arrivals. The expansion demanded a comprehensive signage system that would align with NGMC’s visual identity and provide clear navigation for patients, staff, and visitors.

Miller EG Design was selected to implement nearly all interior signage, excluding only digital and donor displays, and all signage within the emergency parking deck and surrounding lots, as well as directional signage on roadways around the medical campus.

Design Goals
  • Enhance visibility of emergency access points and patient pathways.
  • Create a consistent visual identity between the Green Tower and existing NGMC buildings.
  • Ensure ADA-compliance, ease of navigation, and clarity of information.
  • Establish a color-coded and tower-based wayfinding language supporting intuitive navigation across the campus.

Interior Signage Strategy

Miller EG Design developed and installed a full interior signage suite throughout the Green Tower’s 11 stories, focusing on both wayfinding clarity and reinforcing tower identity.

These signage elements ensure logical and legible movement within the clinical environment, while color schemes and materials match NGMC’s brand identity.

Exterior Signage Integration

Emergency Parking Deck & Flat Lot

Miller EG Design executed all internal signage within the emergency deck, including floor level IDs, directional arrows, and emergency access cues.

Campus-Wide Vehicular & Pedestrian Directional Signage

Installed signage includes large-scale monuments and vertical pylons for street-level and vehicular guidance.

These signs balance legibility, architectural integration, and emergency visibility, especially through high-contrast red panels and clean white/green branding.

Design Principles Applied

  • Color-Coding by Tower: NGMC utilizes color as a spatial orientation device. MEGD reinforced this system through consistent applications across both interior and exterior signage.
  • Environmental Graphic Integration: Signage aligns with architectural finishes such as wood paneling, stone walls, and clean, modern interior palettes.
  • Pictogram & Icon Use: Universal symbols supplement text for multilingual and low-vision accessibility.
  • Emergency Priority Design: Red-toned, bold letterforms on signage near emergency areas ensure rapid recognition from multiple angles.

Community & Operational Impact

The Green Tower addition addresses the region’s growing healthcare demand, and signage plays a pivotal role in ensuring the building serves its function effectively. Wayfinding enables:

  • Reduced patient anxiety during high-stress emergency visits.
  • Faster staff and EMS orientation, improving efficiency.
  • Reinforced NGMC brand identity across new and existing facilities.

This system enhances the total experience—from arriving via vehicle to navigating to patient rooms—helping both visitors and staff feel grounded and informed.
