Improving Wayfinding in Downtown Atlanta for the 2026 World Cup

In preparation for the 2026 World Cup, downtown Atlanta is gearing up for an extensive overhaul of its signage and wayfinding systems. Miller EG Design, a leader in wayfinding solutions, is eager for the opportunity to take part in this transformative journey, ensuring the city is ready to welcome visitors from around the world.

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded $140,000 to the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District to update signage for pedestrians and cyclists. This initiative, announced on Wednesday, is part of the ARCโ€™s Livable Centers Initiative, which aims to create more walkable, bikeable, and vibrant communities across the Atlanta metro area. The project will include the installation of murals and other public art displays by local artists, integrating art and functionality to enhance the urban experience.
The $140,000 awarded to the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District is specifically designated for updating pedestrian and cyclist signage. This will encourage walking, cycling, and transit use, and highlight the work of Atlanta artists through commissioned murals and directional signage that reflect the city’s vibrant and diverse culture. The updated wayfinding system will play a crucial role in guiding visitors through the city’s core, enhancing their overall experience and ensuring smooth navigation during the World Cup.

Additionally, other parts of metro-Atlanta are receiving significant funds for similar improvements. The city of Fayetteville has been granted $160,000 for a creative placemaking strategy in its downtown mixed-use district, focusing on developing an arts district and providing incubator space for local artists. Gwinnett County has received $280,000 for a Jimmy Carter Boulevard Area Master Plan, which will help define a multimodal transportation system, land use recommendations for walkable redevelopment, and the development of workforce and affordable housing.

Powder Springs has been awarded $160,000 to update a prior Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) plan to improve connections to new city projects, including parks and amphitheaters. The Town Center Community Improvement District in Cobb County received $200,000 to update its nearly 10-year-old LCI plan to incorporate recent developments, including those at Kennesaw State University, and to examine proposed bus rapid transit routes and housing initiatives.
